Artist Statement

My art pieces have evolved over many years from my original idea. It is only natural that my love of surfing, the ocean and art would blend together perfectly to create and shape my latest work.

The process of creating my pieces take shape and form in my mind while surfing and then become more detailed as I sketch the images. After completing the rough sketches, I spend endless hours researching the authentic fish, reefs, corals and life forms that I will incorporate into tne sculpture. My goal is to emulate nature as close as possible.

Biography: 

Mike Roberts artwork has integrated with his life long passion for surfing. From childhood it has evolved and been influenced by his personal experiences and adventures.

He and his father assembled his first long board from a kit in 1958 and beautiful mermaid painted by Michael adorned the board.

Early in high school he carved tiki sculptures and sold them to fulfill his artistic needs and to afford his first custom surfboard.

Mike was president of the first California school sponsored surf club, Imoi Kai, at Santiago High School.

He has designed and constructed unique furniture and made his living as a mason specializing in natural stone. Mike's unique talent made his work recognizable and in high demand.

Mike is now fortunate to be able to spend his time working on his art projects. He sculpts in stone and wood but his Boardart is where he spends most of his time.

Finding a broken board after a big storm he began with a paring knife and an original idea to carve a monolithic reef scene into the foam of the board. With respect to the original shaper and the board itself, he always leaves a portion untouched so viewers can understand another aspect of the artists lifestyle.

Michaels talent in sculpting is a gift. He hasn’t been influenced by formal training. His Boardart is his original idea that he feels honored to share with others.
